We are underway! The rally officially started this morning, but we left Vejle and Denmark Friday morning to go and be a part of the send off, the parties and what not.
So we drove 800 kilometres and camped in Belgium. But, what do you do when you are danish boys in Belgium and you somewhere to put up your tent, but an actual campsite seems too fancy?
What we did was, we drove around the outskirts of a town and stopped woman out running, if by chance she knew of someone who would kind enough to let us take up a bit of their garden for the night. Lucky for us she did not mistake us for travelling thieves, but told us that she was pretty sure we could camp in her backyard, but we could go to the house and ask her husband, so we did. After the initial awkwardness at their front, trying to explain what on earth we are doing. The nice man, Carlo, invited us around the house to the backyard and show us the how and where of it all.
Then we went on to experience some of the finest hospitality, any of us have ever experienced. We were treated to a hot home cooked meal(instead of the stuff we had bought for sandwiches), nice Belgian beer, local spirit and most importantly we had the pleasure of spending our time with Dagmar and Carlo around the bonfire.
Saturday we got up early, were treated to coffee and breakfast with the hospitable Belgians and got in the car to Calais to catch the ferry. Then the last bit to Goodwood and arrived we had and it was a sight for soar eyes. Fellow rallyers bursting with pride for their noble steeds and in outfits so colourful it hurt to look at. But they all cast envious looks our way when we set up camp and they saw our tent, fit for small wedding party it is. As we got to talking to some of the other teams, it appeared that we might have tightest schedule in the rally.. But hey, the Skoda is doing a great job and she has already gotten the first 1500 kilometres under her belt. She is just getting warmed up.
Saturday evening and night was for drinks, mingling and tales from the road with the rest of the crazy people racing trash cars halfway around the globe, needless to say most of them are quite original. Throw in a dash of Mongolian throat songs and wrestling and it makes for some night.
All in all, it has been an eventful couple of days and exactly the start of our adventure we had hoped for!
Today is the official start of the Mongol Rally 2017 which starts with a lap around the legendary Goodwood Race Circuit. We are ready to represent Denmark wearing our national shirts from Hummel while the Skoda also is equipped in red and white.
